A Luxury Cruise Ship, Stuck Off Greenlands Coast for 3 Days, Is Pulled Free The New York Times

cruise ship aground

The Ocean Explorer expedition has been touted as a cruise ship "purpose-built for expedition travel to the world's most remote destinations," complete with "cutting-edge technology" and its "navigation capabilities." The Ocean Explorer ship was pulled loose by research vessel Tarajoq, which is run by the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, the Danish military’s Joint Arctic Command said on Facebook. Brian Jensen, the head of operations for the Joint Arctic Command, said in the statement that the situation "is of course worrisome."

The Joint Arctic Command said the ship grounded in Alpefjord, part of the Northeast Greenland National Park, the world's largest national park, on Tuesday. According to Greenland travel site Visit Greenland, the remote area is an area considered an "Arctic Desert" because annual rainfall is so low.

The Joint Arctic Command says that when they came across the vessel, there were 206 people onboard. But the Joint Arctic Command also noted in a subsequent statement that the Ocean Explorer was still stuck after a tide came in. The Joint Arctic Command said the earliest the Knud Rasmussen might reach the Ocean Explorer is Friday morning local time. Photos of the stuck Ocean Explorer on Wednesday showed a blue-and-white ship floating in waters with frosted mountain peaks in the distance. Prices for a 17-day expedition that tours Greenland start at more than $15,000 per person.

Denmark’s Danish Maritime Authority has asked police in Greenland to investigate why the ship ran aground and whether any laws had been violated, a police statement said, adding that no one has been charged or arrested. An officer had been on board the ship to carry out “initial investigative steps, which, among other things, involve questioning the crew and other relevant persons on board,” it added. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A Bahamas-flagged Norwegian cruise ship with 206 passengers and crew has run aground in northwestern Greenland, authorities said Tuesday, adding that no one on board was in danger and no damage has been reported.

Alpefjord is about 240 kilometers (150 miles) from the closest settlement, Ittoqqortoormiit, which is nearly 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from the country's capital, Nuuk. It said the cruise ship and its passengers will now travel to a port where the damage to the vessel's bottom can be assessed, and the passengers will be taken to a location from where they can be flown home. Costa Concordia was declared a "constructive total loss" by the cruise line's insurer, and her salvage was "one of the biggest maritime salvage operations". On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated using sponsons (flotation tanks) welded to her sides, and was towed 320 kilometres (200 mi) to her home port of Genoa for scrapping, which was completed in July 2017. "... In the specific situation, however, we do not see acute danger to human life or the environment, which is reassuring."

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The luxury cruise ship MV Ocean Explorer was successfully pulled free on Thursday, three days after running aground in Greenland with 206 people on board, authorities and the ship's owner said. More than 200 passengers will be trapped aboard a luxury cruise ship until at least Friday after it ran aground in a remote part of Greenland Monday afternoon and crew attempts to free the vessel from a bed of sediment, silt and sand have been unsuccessful so far. The ship, the Ocean Explorer, had been carrying 206 passengers and crew members and was headed toward Alpefjord, in a remote corner of Greenland. The ship’s destination was the Northeast Greenland National Park, the world’s northernmost national park, which is home to icebergs, glaciers and high mountains.

Luxury cruise ship stranded in Greenland with Covid-positive passengers is finally pulled free

Aurora Expeditions, the ship’s operator, said there is no immediate danger to anyone on board or to the surrounding environment, and there are enough supplies aboard the ship to last until the Danish naval vessel that has been diverted to help arrives. Operator Aurora Expeditions said that all on board are safe and there is no environmental damage. "We are waiting on the relevant authorities for advice regarding our next steps," the company said in an emailed statement.

Greenland is a semi-independent territory that is part of the Danish realm, as are the Faroe Islands. It’s a little bit frustrating, but we are in a beautiful part of the world,” Fraser told the paper, adding that he himself had come down with COVID-19 on the ship. According to local media, the ship is the Norwegian Escape, with some 3,000 tourists and 1,600 crew on board. Officials hope Norwegian Escape, stranded off the north coast of the Dominican Republic, can be refloated at high tide. The primary mission of the Joint Arctic Command is to ensure Danish sovereignty by monitoring the area around the Faeroe Islands and Greenland, including the Arctic Ocean in the north.

“There have not been any injuries to anybody onboard, no pollution of the environment and no breach of the hull,” SunStone Ships said in a statement. The research vessel which pulled the cruise ship belongs to the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, a government agency, it said. "There have not been any injuries to anybody onboard, no pollution of the environment and no breach of the hull," SunStone Ships said in a statement. The closest ship available to help the vessel can be there no sooner than Friday morning, assuming the weather holds up, the command said, but officials said they were in contact with another cruise ship to standby should they be needed. The cruise ship ran aground above the Arctic Circle on Monday in Alpefjord, which is in Northeast Greenland National Park. The park encompasses almost as much land as France and Spain combined, and about 80% is permanently covered by an ice sheet.

The ship was freed by a fisheries research vessel at high tide, said the cruise ship's owner, Copenhagen-based SunStone Ships, and the Joint Arctic Command, which coordinated the operation. An investigation focused on shortcomings in the procedures followed by Costa Concordia's crew and the actions of her captain, Francesco Schettino, who left the ship prematurely. He left about 300 passengers on board the sinking vessel, most of whom were rescued by helicopter or motorboats in the area. Despite receiving its own share of criticism, Costa Cruises and its parent company, Carnival Corporation, did not face criminal charges.

Crew members attempted to float clear of land at several high tides but were unsuccessful because the boat is held in place by suction from mud, Jensen told Bloomberg. The ship was designed with luxury, offering "state-of-the-art amenities," including an onboard gym, jacuzzi, lounges, a spa, an atrium, a library and more. "We are actively engaged in efforts to free the MV Ocean Explorer, from its grounding," the representative said. The primary mission of the Joint Arctic Command is to ensure Danish sovereignty by monitoring the area around the Faroe Islands and Greenland, including the Arctic Ocean in the north.

Carnival Mexico All Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Carnival Cruises to Mexico All

While it is called Rhythms of the “Night”, the show actually started while it was still light out. This meant that some of the special lighting effects were lost for the first portion of the show. I also thought the food was excellent, with my favorite being the sauteed shrimp and squid. Our only critique was the entire experience seemed rushed. Our entrees were tasty as well, with the Kung Pao Chicken and Hakku Noodles being our favorites.

Carnival Panorama Mexican Riviera Cruise Review – Day 2

We grabbed another round of cocktails at the Panorama Bar on Deck 3 and took our drinks with us to find some better seats in the main theater for tonight’s show. Tonight’s performance was Soulbound, a mischievous and enchanting tale of voodoo. While the Princess enjoyed this show, I did not like it at all. Within five minutes, I had a cup of coffee in hand, and we were escorted to a table for two near the aft of the ship.

Carnival Panorama, Carnival’s newest cruise ship setting sail starting Dec 2019, offers you three itinerary options for taking a Mexican Riviera cruise. All will be departing from the convenient port of Long Beach (Los Angeles). Whether you’re seeking quality beach time or action-packed adventures, cruises to Puerto Vallarta will deliver the vacation you’ve been craving. On Mexico cruises to Puerto Vallarta, scuba dive with manta rays, spot dolphins playing in the waves, and hike to jungle cascades. Admire contemporary Latin American art in this breezy seaside city on your Carnival cruise to Puerto Vallarta.

Gotta see Puerto Vallarta?

The wife sampled the chicken quesadilla and vegetable lasagna. While it was only our first dinner, we both agreed the main dining room was just as good, if not slightly better, than other contemporary cruise lines. As we were traveling from the East Coast, we flew to California two nights before the cruise.

We were also able to see the Thermal Suite and fitness center before they were crowded with other cruisers. We planned on trying out some of the onboard amenities today. Our bodies were still adjusting to the time zone changes, so we were up before 7 am.

Mazatlán is the largest port on Mexico’s Pacific coast, known for its charming old town, top-notch museums and 10-mile seaside promenade. The city is a delightful place to explore, and you might like to venture to nearby Stone Island on the Nature Discovery and Turtle Sanctuary excursion. The Mexican Riviera is comprised of a string of incredible port cities and beach resorts along the sun-drenched Pacific Coast of Mexico.

THINKING ABOUT BAJA MEXICO?

From finding the right destination to choosing the best departure date, we're here to help. Plus, our experienced travel consultants have access to exclusive vacation deals to make sure you get the best value for your time and money. Of course, this free admission was all self-guided, so we ended up booking two of the tours, the Glory Days Historical Tour and the Haunted Encounters Tour. Each of these tours were about an hour long and cost $10 each per person. We spent a good majority of the day here roaming the ship after completing the two guided tours. It is amazing to see how similar yet different cruising is now.

Escape to Mexico’s original seaside getaway with Carnival cruises to Ensenada. Once a favorite hideaway for high-rolling Hollywood stars, Ensenada is now one of Mexico’s most popular ports of call. You can sightsee, shop or kayak at Punta Banda… but the true pleasures of this festive city are culinary. That’s why a cruise to Ensenada, Mexico should top every foodie’s wish list. Have your fill of fresh oysters and sip a rich Baja merlot.

Straight from the Love and Marriage show, it was time for the White Hot Night Party. Glow sticks and music from all decades were the features of this indoor party. The show is approximately 60 minutes, complete with storytelling, acrobatics, and visual effects. The best comparison I have is that it is similar to a Cirque du Soleil show.

Most evenings of the cruise, the Liquid Lounge, the ship’s main theater, is home to one of Carnival’s signature Playlist Productions. For Carnival Panorama, there are two exclusive shows, Broadway Beats and Rock Revolution, along with two other productions. We had looked into visiting the Queen Mary prior to our cruise. This was the perfect option to spend the day as it is within walking distance from the terminal, and they will store your luggage for you. So, we headed over and checked our luggage with the bellhop.

What To Wear on a Cruise Vacation day, evening & formal night

what to wear on cruise

If you're cruising in tropical regions, pack one pair of shorts for every two days of your cruise (in cold regions, switch shorts for pants or jeans). If you like to vary your look, pack different color shorts or breezy skirts. When going on a cruise, there are certain clothes you should not wear, including offensive t-shirts, cut-off jeans, and overly revealing swimwear. Also, most cruise lines discourage beachwear, shorts, or flip-flops in dining rooms and bars. During the day on a cruise, you’ll likely be doing a range of activities, particularly if you have a day at sea.

What To Wear on a Cruise: 5 Day-to-Night Outfit Ideas [INFOGRAPHIC]

Sturdy, comfortable hiking or athletic shoes are obviously needed for hiking excursions, such as the Scenic Coastal Hike in St. Maarten or the Hop-on, Hop-off trolley tour in Key West. Also know that closed-toe shoes are mandatory for zip-lining and most horseback riding, ATV and bike tours. I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand. The benefit to this is keeping organized, which makes unpacking so much easier, on the first day of your cruise. Here’s a list of clothing to bring on a 7 day Caribbean or warm weather cruise.

What To Wear on a Cruise: Guide to Cruise Line Dress Codes

Men should also plan to pack versatile outfits that can work well as evening outfits for Casual Night. Consider packing half-zips, long sleeve shirts and crewnecks paired with jeans. For men, this is your time to pack those Hawaiian shirts or fun patterns!

Cruises

Even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the middle of summer, expect temperatures to range from the mid-50s to mid-60s (degrees Fahrenheit) during the day. Take your time and put some thought into packing for a Carnival Cruise and you’ll be ready to dress perfectly for every cruise occasion. In this video I share more information about how to plan your outfits for a 7 day cruise. It’s full of real tips that you can use as you’re planning what to wear on your upcoming cruise. For ladies, dressing in an evening gown, cocktail dress, or fancy outfit is perfect.

Alaska is known for its stunning scenery - and it’s one of our favorite places to cruise! However, you can almost guarantee that you will run into cooler weather during your cruise. Even in the heat of summer, you can be hit with cold and rainy weather in Alaska. If you’re cruising to ports of call around Europe with Royal Caribbean, you’re most likely sailing during late spring, summer or early fall. The vast majority of Royal Caribbean’s European sailings start in April or May and end in September or October. Here are a few basic definitions of each dress code according to Royal Caribbean standards.

The Glamour of Gala Night: A Guide to Upscale Attire

Cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits are appropriate for these occasions. It’s a chance to showcase more elegant and sophisticated attire while enjoying a special evening onboard. Dressing up on a cruise is not mandatory, but it can enhance the overall experience and add to the festive atmosphere onboard.

Daytime Cruise Wear

When boarding your cruise ship, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Evening chic attire on a cruise is a step below formal wear but still requires guests to dress up. This may include a dressy skirt or pants with a nice blouse for women and a jacket with dress pants for men.

Whether you're interested in history and want to explore ruins or would rather relax on the beach with a cold beverage in hand, there's a cruise getaway waiting for you. Of course it’s colder at night, and during the earlier and later times in the cruise season. Packing for days of beachgoing and shopping will call for different outfits for adventures like horseback riding, ziplining and ATV tours.

Cruise Outfit Packing List for Women

If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking around the ship during days at sea, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. Sneakers will also be useful if you try out a fitness class or use the gym equipment in the ship’s state-of-the-art fitness center. Footwear should not be an afterthought when packing your suitcase for a cruise. While you might have the urge to throw in a pair of flip flops and call it a day, there are a few other essential shoes you’ll need to bring along on your trip.

Here’s a simple women’s clothing packing list for a 7 day cruise, to use as a guide. Some people like to bring more and some people less, so adjust quantities of your favorite items accordingly. I’ve also included a few bathing suits and cover ups, shawls, tote bags and evening bags – accessories often complete the look, but are also really useful on a cruise. Even if you’re taking a cruise around the Caribbean, it’s smart to take a light sweater or fleece to wear at night when the temperature tends to cool down. After all, you won’t want to get chilly while enjoying the starry sky from your stateroom veranda or on one of the ship’s decks. While it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in your swimsuit while lounging beside the pool, you’ll need a cover-up to walk from your stateroom to the pool, and vice-versa.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack a handful of swimsuits in your bag. Aim to bring at least three if you’re going on a seven-day cruise. In general terms, however, the dress on a Caribbean cruise at sea is decidedly casual. Swimsuits are appropriate on the top decks around the pool, and it’s not unusual to see people wearing them around the ship while covered up. You will want to have a shirt/cover up if heading in somewhere to eat for lunch.

Each cruise line has it’s own dress code, however most have a version of casual, smart casual, and formal nights. The terminology that cruise lines are using reflect subtle changes to the dress code. While some cruise lines may allow jeans in specific dining venues, it’s best to avoid them on formal nights. Please check with your cruise line’s specific dress code to make sure you follow their guidelines. The dress code for formal nights on a cruise typically requires guests to wear formal attire, such as a suit and tie for men and a cocktail dress or gown for women.

T\nhough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Some cruises may have specific dress code requirements for certain events or venues onboard. For example, formal or gala evenings may call for more elegant attire, such as cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits. These dressier nights allow you to celebrate and showcase your sophisticated style while enjoying a special evening onboard. On formal nights, men might wear suits, while women can don cocktail dresses, though elegant resort wear is also acceptable attire. T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, tank tops, caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main or specialty restaurants at any time.

This attractive one piece off the shoulder bathing suit fits women of every age,  shape and size. Women of every age will look elegantly casual in a romper jumpsuit. Pair a pretty top with a pair of white capri pants or jeans for a casual evening on a cruise. This off the shoulder top comes in different color stripes as well as solids and other patterns. I’ve also included photos of some of my own cruise outfits from past cruises.

Most cruise vacations include at least one formal night where everyone dresses their best for a special dinner. Cruise formal wear still embraces the relaxed energy of sailing, so outfits like a lightweight sport coat, chinos, a colorful dress or a jumpsuit will fit right in. You'll also want to include some smart casual looks, which means something that's a step up from sneakers and sweatpants for your other evening meals. Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights. Royal Caribbean's dinner dress code includes nights that are formal, smart-casual and casual.

Norwegian Launches 2024 Summer Season in Europe

The company said that falling trees damaged overhead electric wires or blocked tracks largely in northern Germany, but also in the central state of Hesse. A woman who was struck by a falling tree on Thursday in the eastern Dutch town of Wilp later died of her injuries, her employer said. The storm also brought down trees and prompting warnings of flooding on the North Sea coast.

One passenger posted a video on Facebook showing the view from her room's window Thursday with the cruise ship bobbing up and down and creaking in the throes of high waves. "The situation started with the ship's horn sounding for an extremely long time, then the PA system came on, and we just heard scuffling and general moving around noises," Lawrence said. Then, passengers heard the alarm that meant they should head to their muster stations — the place on board where guests gather in case of an emergency. Support vessels are working with the ship as it continues to head toward the port city in northern Germany, according to the company. Reuters reported earlier Friday, citing a Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre official, that another ship had assisted with a tow.

"At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," the statement said. Lawrence, who had picked the cruise to see the Northern Lights, said the day started out with fairly big waves but that the captain had let passengers know to expect that. But as the day went on, the waves got bigger until they were large enough to spray her window on the sixth deck, she said.

Several cruises also offer overnight calls in destinations like Istanbul, Turkey; Florence, Italy; and Reykjavik, Iceland. A Norwegian cruise ship lost the ability to navigate after a rogue wave crashed into it Thursday, the cruise company HX said. The ship, operated by HX, a cruise company owned by Norway's Hurtigruten Group, was about 120 miles from Denmark's west coast when the wave struck, Reuters reported. The wave's force shattered some of the ship's windows and caused it to tilt "pretty violently," passenger Elizabeth Lawrence told Business Insider.

Another clip shared on X showed the view of the terrifying swells from the glamorous windows of an on-board suit, which tilted precariously toward the water between each wave. Streets around harbors flooded overnight in some Dutch North Sea towns including Scheveningen, the seaside suburb of The Hague.

The ship was currently being steered manually from the engine room but cannot navigate. Esvagt support vessels had arrived to help the ship navigate until the ship could be towed to port. The ship, owned by Hurtigruten Expeditions, had even left port early and skipped several stops to try and stay ahead of the storm. But they were in the middle of the North Sea when heart-stopping wave came crashing down around 4 p.m.

A “temporary loss of power” occurred after the Maud was struck by a “rogue wave,” ship owner HX told The Post in a statement. The ship, traveling under its own power, is currently sailing to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation, HX said in an updated statement Friday. “Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave,” Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement.

FIRST LOOK: Inside Explora Journeys' first ship, EXPLORA I

explora 1 cruise ship

This includes an infinity pool overlooking the ocean and one under a retractable glass roof. Instead, it was subtly luxurious, appearing more like a premium hotel than a cruise ship. Think "quiet luxury" instead of something glamorously ostentatious.

explora 1 cruise ship

Ocean RETREAT Residence

The shop is dedicated to the ultra-luxury Swiss watch brand and offers for purchasing an extensive selection of models including from the renowned Rolex Oyster Perpetual series. "MSC Yacht Club" 24-hour butler services are provided complimentary to all Ocean Residences and Ocean Penthouses. What will likely put some travelers off is the cost (around $200 per person, without wine). The line will partner with a new top chef from the world of fine dining every three months to create the menu. It’s pricy, but foodies with a penchant for visiting some of the world’s best restaurants will likely go for it. Explora I is an easy-to-navigate ship, with suites located on decks 6 to 10 and most public spaces located on decks 11 to 14 (there is no Deck 13) and on decks 4 and 5.

Explora really wants you to know that unlike most cruise giants, they are family owned and European.

Speaking of luxury goods, Explora I has the world's only Rolex boutique at sea (there are also Cartier, Piaget and Panerai shops onboard). What Rolex lovers know is that it's impossible to walk into a store on land and walk out with a watch, as the company has a system of waiting lists for the luxury time pieces. A gorgeous Steinway piano anchors the top of the lobby (and there's another in the ship's Explora Lounge). Explora Journeys has a partnership with the legendary piano company and often has guest artists onboard (known as "luminaries") who specialize in the delicate instrument. If the next five ships are just as ritzy as the Explora I, I have no doubt this new brand will go on to become a strong competitor in the growing luxury cruise market.

Maiden Journey

Explora I is currently sailing around the British Isles before crossing the Atlantic to New York, where the ship arrives on September 25. Some spa-goers may not even know it’s there unless they request a tour, since it’s not visible from inside the spa and there is no signage to it. Under a gorgeous blue sky filled with hundreds of migratory Canadian geese, I followed our park guide through the wilds of Zwin Nature Reserve, straddling the Belgium–Netherlands border on the North Sea coast. We were on a mission, foraging for samphire and sea buckthorn, just 25 minutes north of Zeebrugge, with swooping cormorants and wading herons on the watery horizon. Later, guided by a local chef, I chop, blend and saute our bounty to add to dishes of samphire tapenade and seafood bisque.

Overall, the service was extremely personalized with 640 team members and a 1.25 to 1 guest to room host ratio. My room attendant offered thoughtful touches based on my behaviors, like providing extra water, sparkling and natural, after noticing that I regularly left the provided glass bottles empty and inquired what my favorite spirit was to customize the minibar. Ocean Terraces, Explora Journey’s 301 entry-level suites, measure 377 square feet, making them among the largest in their category at sea. Space matters, too, especially on a luxury ship, with close to 1,000 passengers at capacity.

At the top of the ship on Deck 14 is the open-air sports court and outdoor fitness area, allowing passengers to get their fitness fix while enjoying the ocean’s breeze. Below, on Deck 12, are two of the ship’s slim and long hot tubs, towards the aft, while the adults-only Helios Pool & Bar lies at the front. The running track loops Deck 12, and rows of sun loungers and a cluster of cabanas are here, too, making it one of the best spots for sunbathing away from the main pools, with typically fewer younger passengers using this space. With 11 globally-inspired culinary options available, each focused on sourcing from sustainable and local-to-the-port vendors, it is impossible to go hungry.

As a welcome gift is provided a bottle of Dom Perignon (vintage Champagne). OCEAN PENTHOUSES and OCEAN RESIDENCES are with separate living and sleeping areas, 4-6-seat dining tables, plenty of lights, contemporary furniture, original artworks. OCEAN RESIDENCES' terraces are fitted with an outdoor Jacuzzi/whirlpool, 4-seat dining table and padded sun loungers.

This brand-new high-brow cruise line is currently showcasing its first ship, Explora I, in Northern Europe where I joined a three-night sailing from Hamburg to Southampton, following its maiden voyage on August 1. However, the naming ceremony was postponed and held on October 12th (2023) at NYC's Manhattan Cruise Terminal. On October 18, 2018, MSC Group and Fincantieri signed the MoA (memorandum of agreement) for building 4x ultra-luxury ships, with contract value EUR 2,0 billion (~USD 2,3B / ~GBP 1,75B). The announcement mentioned that the first unit will be delivered in 2023-Q2, and that the design is based on GT tonnage/volume ~64,000 tons and capacity 500 staterooms. Aft are the Pan-Asian Restaurant, Aft Lounge & Bar, and the Lower Aft Plunge Pool & Lounge (outdoor swimming pool with a sundeck area).

It seems I’m not the only one whose affinity for luxury has made me a fan of Explora.

These boats are owned by MSC Group and operated as a separate fleet under the company's new luxury brand MSC EXPLORA JOURNEYS. Explora Journeys is welcoming of the family market and multi-generational groups, with 82 cabins that connect two suites together. This is a smart move to draw larger families or even groups of friends traveling together.

With cruising experiencing growth on all levels, it's perhaps not surprising that the environment is ripe for a new all-inclusive luxury cruise line. Typically, Ungerer says this demographic is split between the Americas and the rest of the world. And about half of these travelers are first time cruisers, the CEO of the new brand said. This concept is helmed by rotating guest chefs, including some who have led kitchens with several Michelin stars.

The thermal area would get pretty crowded during sea days, but I popped in on one port morning and had the area to myself for over an hour. Travelers who are put off by the idea of a main dining room and buffet restaurant and instead like to feel they have the choice of upmarket restaurants will be in their element. There’s also a culinary school, the Chef’s Kitchen, where daily classes take place for an extra fee for those passengers that are keen to learn how to cook some of the dishes served onboard. And for those who see money as no object, Anthology could be a hit.

Cabin types include Owner's Residence (1), Ocean Residences (22), Ocean Penthouses (67), and Ocean Suites (371). The ship has a total of 82 interconnecting cabins (Family Suites) designed for families and small-group travelers. Passengers disperse nicely to the different venues to enjoy drinks or a bite to eat. Emporium Marketplace and, for breakfast, Fil Rouge certainly appeared the busiest dining spots on our sailing, but, again, never overcrowded. From Crema Café to the Astern Pool & Bar, there was always a nice buzz onboard throughout the day, with the ship’s passengers mostly winding down early.

Facilities include 78 interconnecting suites, suitable for families who prefer a separate bedroom from their older kids and teens. There are high chairs in restaurants, a modern kids’ club, Nautilus Club, with organized activities, age-appropriate toys in suites for passengers two years and younger and a shore program with families in mind, too. The outdoor retreat (a row of sun loungers on the side of Deck 5) accessed off the thermal area, isn’t an inviting space.

The turquoise-hued pool is flanked by plush padded double loungers that seem to float over the shallow edges of the pool, with two hot tubs facing the ocean. The popular Emporium Marketplace takes up half of Deck 11 and venues including the Chef’s Kitchen, Malt Whisky Bar, Nautilus Club and the Explora Lounge fill the other half. Passengers spend plenty of time on this level, with spaces for dining, drinking, relaxing and enrichment. The majority of Deck 10 is occupied with suites, though it’s also where the Bridge, Ocean Wellness Fitness Center and the Atoll Pool & Bar are located. Cabin types include OWNER'S RESIDENCE (1), OCEAN RESIDENCES (22), OCEAN PENTHOUSES (67), and the majority are the OCEAN SUITES/RESIDENCES (371, including 70x GRAND). The ship has a total of 82 interconnecting cabins (family suites) designed for families and small-group travelers.

What To Wear On Cruise For Men

cruise attire for men

During Viking cruises to Alaska and Antarctica dress codes are likely to be even more relaxed as outdoor ondeck and onshore activities often take place well into the evenings. It's a bit of a challenge to bundle up for sky watching in fancy clothes. During the day, Viking's dress code calls for casual and comfortable attire, including shorts and jeans. Swimsuits, shorts, cover-ups and exercise attire should be reserved for poolside, in the fitness center and on the sports deck. The dress code onboard Costa Cruise Line's ships is overall casual.

Long-sleeve Linen Shirt

Pam and her husband, Myron, travel almost three months of the year, enjoying all the benefits of premium cruising. She's learned a thing or two and has a checklist for nearly everything related to cruising, and enjoys sharing those tips and lists with you. Norwegian has added a premium option for its Free at Sea offerings, giving you the opportunity to upgrade many of its options to the max.

Formal Nights

Most men will be wearing beige chinos or dark pants or jeans, with a polo style shirt. What you’d wear to a nice restaurant is perfect for dining rooms and restaurants on board. Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.

Eveningwear: Overview

If you're cruising in Alaska or run into a rainstorm in the Caribbean or Europe, you'll probably spend most of your day inside. Keep a rain jacket or fleece handy in case you want to soak up the scenery from outside. For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable. Shorts (including cutoff jeans), T-shirts, sportswear, flip-flops, bathing suits, caps and men's sleeveless shirts are never permitted in the main dining room or specialty restaurants during dinner. For those who prefer a more relaxed dining experience, cruise ships often offer a variety of casual dining options where the dress code is more relaxed.

A stylish linen shirt or a casual button-down shirt paired with shorts or comfortable pants can create a chic and relaxed poolside look. Packing a formal gown for a cruise is recommended if you plan to attend formal nights. However, a cocktail dress or dressy outfit will also be good enough to avoid bringing a gown. During casual nights on a cruise, resort wear or casual attire is usually appropriate. This can include nice slacks, a blouse for women, khakis, and a polo shirt for men.

How to Create A Cruise Capsule Wardrobe

If you’re going on a cruise built around a specific hobby or activity, like golfing or hiking, you’ll obviously need to pack accordingly. Dress shirts aren’t as versatile as short-sleeve button-ups, when it comes to what goes on during a cruise, but they also don’t take up that much room. Polo shirts and short-sleeve button-ups, like khaki or linen shorts, can do double and triple duty on basically any kind of cruise.

If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared. In addition, passengers who would like to participate in theme nights are encouraged (but not required) to dress according to a specific theme. Examples include the White Party, Gatsby Night or the '60s and '70s-themed Flower Glory Party. Boots are an excellent option for colder weather destinations or activities like hiking. They provide extra warmth and protection, making them suitable for outdoor pursuits. They provide coverage when you’re away from the water and can be a fashionable accessory for your poolside or beachside looks.

That is because even if the swimming pools aren’t heated (although many are heated on Alaskan cruises) , there are still lots of hot tubs for you to enjoy. Pack The North Face Men's Cyclone Windbreaker Jacket, which features a compact, lightweight and durable design. Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Cruise Formal Night – Frequently Asked Questions (and answers)

The dress code on a cruise ship can vary depending on the cruise line and specific sailing. While some cruise lines have formal nights where dressing up is recommended, others have more relaxed dress codes. You must check the dress code guidelines provided by your cruise line and plan your attire accordingly. Since cruise lines can really differ on what type of attire is expected on formal nights, it’s important to check your cruise line’s dress codes to make sure you pack the appropriate cruise wear. As well, many cruise lines don’t extend the formal dress code to specialty dining restaurants on “formal night”. If you prefer to be served but would rather dress in smart casual wear, consider making reservations at one of your cruise ship’s specialty restaurants.

In fact, most cruise lines won’t have anything that formal, and you’ll more likely run into this situation if you’re on a private cruise. Meaning, perhaps the social club you’re in or the company you work for is throwing a special event. When you’re on the boat, you’ll never be that far away from your room, and if you don’t end up wearing the jacket and the pants together, they’ll be effective separates for dinner or drinks. For watches, you can bring one, as long as it’s a versatile, luxury sport watch.

It’s always a good idea to check your cruise line’s website or consult with your travel agent to understand the specific requirements for formal nights. While some cruise lines may allow jeans in specific dining venues, it’s best to avoid them on formal nights. Please check with your cruise line’s specific dress code to make sure you follow their guidelines. When it’s time to unwind by the pool or hit the shores, what to wear on a cruise ship during the day includes swim-ready attire. Women can bask in the sun in one-piece suits or trendy bikinis, complimented by a chic cover-up. Men can wear stylish swim trunks with a casual shirt, epitomizing the cruise for men’s attire.

The key to perfecting your cruise wardrobe is anticipating your needs for the day ahead. Whether participating in onboard activities or venturing ashore, the proper attire will enhance your comfort and overall cruise experience. Please remember to make your clothing choices for the cruise’s destinations and anticipated weather conditions. This way, whether you’re soaking up rays on the deck or discovering new cultures on land, you’ll always be adequately dressed for the occasion. As I mentioned above cruise formal nights take place in the main dining room but it depends on the length of your cruise and the line you are sailing with as to how many you can expect. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie.

While swimwear can be worn almost anywhere outside, including poolside bars, swimsuits are not permitted in most public areas, including some outdoor dining venues. You can dine in a swimsuit in the alfresco section of the buffet, but make sure you dry off and cover up when you head indoors to grab a plate of food. A similar rule applies to bathrobes -- wear them to the spa but not to breakfast. On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance. The dress code at Remy, the other adults-only specialty restaurant (only on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy), is a bit dressier.

I’d recommend a lightweight, unstructured navy jacket made from cotton, linen, silk, wool, or some combination of those. It’ll go with stone chinos, white denim, light grey linen trousers, light khaki chino shorts, everything. A luxurious, open weave wool silk blend fabric from Italian mill Lanificio di Pray. This perfect relaxed, versatile, warm weather jacket features an unstructured cut with no padding or canvassing. Regardless of whether you’re on a cruise in the Caribbean or a multi-stop European voyage, you’re definitely going to need a few style basics that can be used to create several outfits. Here are a few items that are useful to pack and bring on a cruise.

Settled by Germans in the 1840s, "Brew City," as it's known, also is a mecca of sorts for beer lovers — and not just because it's home to the original Miller Brewing Company complex, which is open daily for tours. You'll also find lots of craft breweries that you can visit on your own or as part of a tour, and you can tour (and drink at) the original Pabst Brewery. One thing that all three of the main lines operating in the Great Lakes have in common is that they include tours during at least some stops and sometimes every stop in their base fares. Pearl Seas Cruises and Viking are particularly known for including lots of shore excursions in their base fares. Then there are stops at quieter places such as Mackinac Island, where your sightseeing might include an excursion by horse-drawn carriage to historical sites.

When do cruises go to the Great Lakes?

The locks themselves are the big attractions in Sault Saint Marie — head to the observation deck at Soo Locks Park to watch freighters passing by and learn more at the Soo Locks Visitor Center. All of the above lines operate ships in the Great Lakes that carry fewer than 400 passengers. In general, the vessels are intimate and relatively high-end, with pricing to match.

You'll start in, say, Toronto, and work your way west to Chicago — or vice versa. The cruise season in the Great Lakes is also limited in its length by the opening and closing of the St. Lawrence Seaway — the system of locks, canals and channels that connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Cruise vessels that operate in the Great Lakes can't access the region until the locks on the St. Lawrence Seaway open for the summer, something that typically happens the last week of March. They need to be out of the Great Lakes before the St. Lawrence Seaway closes for the winter (typically in December). Here, The Points Guy offers up a guide to everything you need to know about planning a sailing in the Great Lakes. Located along the north shore of Manitoulin Island, Little Current is considered the gateway to the World’s Largest Freshwater Island.

NautiCat – Traverse City

As noted above, the Great Lakes offer a wide mix of attractions and experiences. During a Great Lakes cruise, you might find yourself climbing aboard the bus where Rosa Parks took a stand at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit on one day and kayaking through the wild marshlands of Point Pelee, Ontario, the next. Two more lines that occasionally operate sailings in the region are German line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and France-based Ponant. Tour organizer Smithsonian Journeys also occasionally offers Great Lakes sailings using chartered Ponant vessels. Both cater to a generally older crowd, which is the main market for Great Lakes cruises. Viking's itineraries have the most outdoorsy options, while Pearl Seas Cruises offers trips with a lot of small-town stops.

Visit the famous 39-room Glensheen Mansion built with remarkable 20th-century craftsmanship, telling the story of the Duluth region. Board our comfortable Motorcoach for scenic and narrated drive through Marquette. View iron ore docks and the many beautiful Victorian homes that embellish the city, including those in the East Side Home District. Admire Lake Superior Beach, Tourist Park, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and downtown Marquette.

The 47-foot catamaran is the largest commercial sailing vessel on the Great Lakes, and it may be one of the most fun. You score the best deal on the afternoon kid’s cruise in which anyone can help raise and lower sails and blow bubbles off the back.

Cruise liners that you might expect to find in the Caribbean are increasingly offering week-long trips within Lake Michigan alone, or on various Great Lakes. Here, are a few options for catching some Lake Michigan wind in your sail (or cruise deck).

It's said that the equivalent of one million bathtubs of water tumbles over the falls each minute. Seven-night round trip cruises from Chicago sail primarily on Lake Michigan, entering Lake Huron to visit Mackinac Island. Another seven-night option is a one-way cruise from Chicago to Midland, ON, or vice versa.
